A/N: for the Far Side of the World challenge at Tolkien Weekly

Waves sparkled gold, a breeze sweeping the sea, but none so dazzling as those to the West.

“What goes there, Grandfather?”

“The far side of the world, Faramir. No man dares set foot there.”

“Why?”

“Tis for elves, and other eternal beings.”

“If we can’t go there, why must we stand silently at Bread?”

“Respect. Gratitude for the lives we were spared.”

Boromir gazed at the horizon, mapping plans of adventure and glory.

“What is it like?”

“A place of peace and beauty, or so it is said.”

Boromir sighed. Maybe when he was too old to lift his sword.

Oh, that was lovely and poignant, and at the same time beautifully underscores young Boromir's restlessness. So good, thank you.

Usually run screaming from anything with the word 'elf' in but I was right to trust this one. As always you managed to say so much with so few words. A beautiful child tragically fated to be butchered by Orcs ...

'Maybe when he was too old to lift his sword'

I am not too keen on elves either, but this is lovely. So much in character for Boromir and tragic in the light of what's to happen. Thank you for posting.

very nice. I can definitely see the adult Boromir we know and love in your piece. Almost made me cry. Love the title by the way. Had to read it after I read the title. Thank you for sharing.
